One of the causes of bad breath that’s hardest to get rid of if your breath is caused by it, is tobacco. Today tobacco comes in many shapes: cigarettes, snus, cigars and chewing tobacco – to name a few. What they have in common is that they’re expensive habits and they cause killer breaths.
So how does this happen?
Tobacco ruins your breath in many ways. First of all it inhibits the flow of saliva in your mouth causing mouth dryness. This is never a good thing, as it causes bacteria growth, which again produces sulfur compounds in your mouth.
Secondly, the bacteria growth caused by your mouth dryness can cause gum disease; an infection in your gums. It can also cause the gums to withdraw, making your teeth more vulnerable to odor-causing decay.
Furthermore, smoking can also worsen sinus conditions such as post nasal drip. These conditions usually cause quite a foul odor that does you no good whatsoever.
Last, but not least, there’s the obvious cause. Tobacco leaves tobacco residue in your mouth; on your tongue, in your cheeks and on your teeth. Not only does this contribute to discoloring your teeth, but it also smells quite bad.
