A common misconception is that if you have bad breath, it’s caused by not brushing your teeth or using mouthwash often enough. This is pure B.S. Most of us brush our teeth at least twice a day; in the morning and before going to bed. Of course, you should brush your teeth twice a day and maybe even use mouthwash.

However, there’s a vast difference between normal dental hygiene and what I call overbrushing your teeth. Brushing your teeth too often can lead to two things, both of which are bad.

First of all, brushing your teeth too often can cause your gums to withdraw, leaving the parts of your teeth which are not covered in enamel. This will leave the less protected teeth exposed and cause holes in your teeth.

Another reason is that both toothpaste and mouthwash cause dehydration of your mouth. This will kill those good bacteria in your mouth which are good for both your oral hygiene and also produce a healthy breath because there is no oxygen-rich saliva for them to live in. In oxygen-poor environments, anaerobic bacteria thrive and they’re well-known for causing bad breath.

Therefore, you should not brush your teeth more than twice a day and always drink a glass of water after brushing your teeth.
